TIPS FOR DECLUTTERING

Decluttering can be really refreshing!  Here are a few tips to get started.  Decluttering your home can definitely be a big project but breaking it down into manageable steps can make it more approachable.  It can feel overwhelming by the sheer amount of stuff in your homes and the cupboards that need sorting.  You are not alone many of us are in the same position.

Here are some strategies that might help:

  1. Set Clear Goals: Decide what you want to achieve.  Are you looking to simplify a room, reduce overall clutter, or just clear out unused items? Define what you want to achieve with your decluttering.  Do you want to create more space, make it easier to find things, or reduce stress or get the good vibes back.  Having clear goals can keep you motivated.   Planners are wonderful tools to help set goals and plans.  Attached is a link for a handy planner
  2. Start Small: Begin with one small area or category (like clothes, books, or kitchen items, single drawer or closet to avoid feeling overwhelmed.  This can make the task feel less overwhelming and gives you a sense of accomplishment.
  3. Sort and Decide: Use the “keep, donate, or discard” method, I have added one more box to my list “find a home” these are items that need a place to go in the home, but you have no room in a cupboard, draw or shelf to put it away as yet.  If you haven’t used an item in the past year and it doesn’t hold significant value, consider letting it go.  These boxes came in handy to use in the meantime and can repurpose them at a later stage.
  4. Organize as You Go: As you declutter, organize the items you’re keeping into categories.  This helps maintain order and makes it easier to find things and help keeps things tidy.  Use the four-box method as you go through your items, if you have a place/home for an item already go put it back even if that place is untidy and needs sorting you will get there.    Items that are broken or trash go straight in a bin bag.  This helps streamline the decision-making process and keeps you organized.
  5. Use Storage Solutions: Invest in bins, shelves, or organizers to keep your space tidy and items accessible.
  6. Keep the Momentum: Regularly reassess and declutter to prevent build-up.

Decide on what you tackling first?

Break It Down: Start by breaking down the task into smaller, more manageable steps in your journal.  For example, you could focus on one category or section at a time rather than trying to organize everything at once.

Create a Plan: Set specific goals and deadlines for each step.  For instance, decide to organize one category by the end of the week.  Having a clear plan can make the task seem less daunting.  Outline a plan for tackling different areas of your home.  You might choose to work on one room at a time or focus on specific categories like clothing or books or clearing surfaces.

Use Tools: Utilize tools that can help you categorize more efficiently.

Prioritize: Identify and focus on the areas that are overwhelming you the most.  Like mine is my office so much paperwork which I could digitize rather than have piles of paper and files and won’t need boxes and boxes of archives.

Set Time Limits: Allocate a specific amount of time each day to organize and declutter.

Ask for Help: If it feels too overwhelming, consider getting a friend, relative or colleague who can assist with some of the tasks.

Reward Yourself: Set up a reward system for completing milestones.  Treat yourself to something you enjoy. For example, a small spa treatment I love taking advantage of special offers or doing something away from home that you really enjoy which you find is rejuvenating your mind and soul.  Celebrating small victories can boost our motivation to keep going.  Acknowledge your achievements along the way.

Evaluate and Adjust: Periodically review your progress and adjust your progress and approach if needed.  If your find that certain strategies aren’t working be flexible and try new ones.

Make it Fun: Put on some music or an audiobook while you declutter.  Turning it into a more enjoyable activity can help keep you motivated.

Stay Focused: Stay focused on the task you have chosen for the day or week.  This prevents the process from becoming chaotic.

Set Time Limits: Allocate specific times for decluttering sessions.  Even if it is just 15-30 minutes a day can lead to significant progress over time.

It is not an easy road ahead, as habits and self-doubts need to change along the road to get the balance and flow you most desire.  Cluttering can be from certain events that have taken place in your life, and you just lost the flow, energy and balance.  One just needs to find the lost flow, energy and balance, to begin the journey to having a peaceful and beautiful home and surrounds that you love.  Once the clutter is clear we can begin the journey of revamping the spaces in your home that gives you a new refreshing outlook on life.    I personally believe bad energy exists in our environment and cluttering is a blockage to good energy flowing throughout our space.
